I know, I know. Nobody wants to look back at 2020. I get it. 2020 was a storm of a year.
But remember that every cloud has its silver lining. And one of 2020’s upsides was in the digital marketing space. Let’s take a moment to look at 2020 from that perspective.
The year started out as any other, and Q1 was a good time in the digital world. Then we all were asked to stay home for what we thought would be a couple of weeks. And that is when the digital world exploded. Those two weeks turned into months, requiring most of us to figure out how to work remotely, and how to help our children learn remotely. Curbside pickup became the thing, Zoom picked up where the local happy hour ceased, and we necessarily adapted.
As a result of all this change, global online content consumption doubled in 2020, according to DoubleVerify. Their study showed that prior to 2020, on average, people spent just over 3 hours online. In 2020 that number soared to 7 hours! The biggest surge in consumption was on social media, with 48% of consumers spending more time on social platforms such as Facebook. But that’s not all. A whopping 47% are spending more time reading online news, and an equal percentage has increased use of streaming services on connected TV’s.
This increase in online consumption means there are new opportunities for online advertisers. After all, 44% of consumers reported trying new brands after seeing a relevant ad alongside content they’re viewing. And it’s interesting to note that in the US, 57% (more than any other nation) prefer to see relevant ads on social media versus TV.
So as we bid adieu to 2020, let’s remember that change, however it happens, is inevitable. We’ve all managed to surf some big changes that have led us to new ways to make our lives work. Which means that now, more than ever, you have the ability to reach your audience where they are. Online.
