At least 80% of every generation uses social media at least once a day, but each generation uses social media in a different way. And, not only does each group use each platform differently, but they each tend to gravitate to different platforms.
96% of Baby boomers and 90% of Gen Xers use Facebook, often to keep in touch with their friends and family. Millennials also use Facebook (87%), for many of the same reasons Boomers use it, but they also tend to use Instagram. The youngest generation, Gen Zers, are rarely on Facebook – only 36% percent use it. Instead, they gravitate to using Instagram and Snapchat.
When doing digital marketing, it’s important to consider which platform you’re using and who you’re reaching. Right now, your target demographic could be using one platform, but it is important to consider that in a few years, the audience you want to reach may not be using the platforms you are currently advertising on.
As Gen Zers age and reach big life events such as buying a house or getting married, realtors and formal dress wear companies will likely need to pivot to advertising more on Instagram and Snapchat to get the word out. Gen Zers are also more comfortable purchasing products online, and it’s often the way they discover new products, with 85% of Gen Z learning about new products via social media.
The bottom line is, the digital world is always changing and in order to stay ahead, you’ll need to be adaptable with your marketing strategies. If you have any questions regarding digital marketing, please reach out to Sarah, our director of sales! [email protected]
