This year has been difficult on many businesses and shops, especially those without the capability of selling their goods or services online. With Black Friday approaching rapidly, many storefronts are offering exclusive first ever deals in hopes to get customers back through the door while maintaining safety guidelines. We’re sure you’ve had the experience of an ad that seems to follow you around as a not so subtle reminder that you really “need” those new shoes. Whether you’re choosing to shop in store or online this year we have some stats about the popularity of online shopping that might just blow your mind, let’s dive into them now!
Let’s start with how many people shop online, according to BigCommerce, over 75% of people are shopping at least once a month online! This makes sense as the need for convenience is all the more prominent and prevalent these days. It’s also important for businesses considering implementing an ecommerce strategy to understand how to capitalize on this statistic and make the most of the user experience they generate in an online world.
Next, we want to know how many of these people shopping online are using smartphones to do so… according to Adobe, this year alone, 42% of all online shopping is done from smartphones! This is up 55% from where we were last year, and $28B more than last year will be spent on smartphones. Can you believe that?!
Now, what companies are the heaviest hitters or most prominent in terms of bringing in profit through online sales? Statista has the answer. It probably won’t shock you when we say Amazon accounts for 47% of all US Ecommerce sales in 2020, and they are projected to take over half by 2021! Comparing this to the past few years, their power has completely taken off. Now you can ask yourself how much do you think you personally have contributed to this growth?
Then according to Deloitte 65% of shoppers will choose to buy products online instead of in-store to avoid crowds in 2020, while 64% choose to purchase online for the comfort of shopping from home. Which do you prefer?
And last but not least, in terms of future projections… Ecommerce will make up 22% of global retail sales by 2023. Not long ago in 2019 only 14.1% of global retail sales were ecommerce purchases so that’s quite a leap in a short period of time! Some factors contributing to this growth are: rise of mobile ecommerce, increased implementation of multichannel strategies used by businesses, and an overall shift in shopping trends along with the power of influencers and the social channels they are able to utilize.
