Quick Summary: Not sure how to start marketing your business? Before you spend more on ads, content, or another platform, make sure the basics are working. Your Google Business Profile, website, reviews, and the information people find about you online all help customers find you, understand what you offer, and decide what to do next.

The short answer: Start with what people can already find.

At Hookd, one of the questions we hear all the time from businesses getting ready to market is:

Where do I even start?

It’s an understandable question.

Google Ads. Social media. Email. Video. SEO. AI. Content.

There are plenty of places you could spend your time and money.

But starting your marketing doesn’t necessarily mean spending more.

Before you pay to put your business in front of more people, make sure the people already looking for you can easily find you, understand what you offer, and feel confident taking the next step.

And some of the most important places to start are free.

Start With What People Already Find

Think about the last time you looked for a business.

Maybe you needed an electrician, insurance agent, restaurant, auto body shop, or somewhere to get your hair cut.

Chances are, you started online.

Before calling, visiting, or filling out a form, you probably gathered some information first.

What does this business do? Where are they located? Are they open? Do they look credible? What do other customers say? Does their website answer my questions?

Your customers are doing the same thing.

That makes your online presence your digital storefront — and it can create an impression of your business long before you ever get the chance to talk to someone.

Google Business Profile: A Free Place to Start

One of the easiest places to begin is your Google Business Profile.

It’s free, and for many businesses it’s one of the first things people encounter when they search for the company, a product, or a service nearby.

But simply having a profile isn’t the goal.

It needs to accurately represent your business today.

Your business name, location or service area, hours, phone number, website, services, photos, and other important details should be current and useful.

If your hours changed two years ago, important services are missing, or your photos no longer represent the business, you’re making a potential customer work harder to figure out whether you’re the right fit.

And online, people generally aren’t looking for more work.

They’re looking for an answer.

Your Website Has to Continue the Conversation

Your Google Business Profile may help someone discover you.

Your website helps them go deeper.

Those pieces should work together.

When someone moves from a search result or Business Profile to your website, they should quickly be able to answer three questions:

  • Am I in the right place?
  • Does this business offer what I need?
  • What should I do next?

Your website doesn’t need to say everything about your business on one page. It does need to make the important things easy to understand.

Clear services. Useful information. Current contact details. Straightforward navigation. An obvious next step.

Good marketing gets someone’s attention.

A good website gives that attention somewhere to go.

Give People Information They Can Trust

Customers are researching businesses before they reach out, and what they find helps shape their decision.

That includes your website and Google Business Profile, but it can also include your reviews, photos, business listings, social content, and other information you’ve published online.

Keeping those pieces accurate and consistent helps people feel more confident that they understand who you are and what they can expect.

Reviews are an important part of that picture, too.

You don’t need a wall of perfect five-star reviews to look credible. What matters is that customers can see real experiences from real people — and that your business is paying attention.

Responding appropriately to feedback, keeping your information current, and answering the questions customers actually have can do more for trust than simply publishing more content for the sake of publishing.

AI Makes Accurate Information Even More Important

There’s another reason to take control of your online presence.

The way people search is changing.

Search platforms and AI-powered tools increasingly interpret information from across the web to help people understand businesses, compare options, and answer questions.

That makes the information you publish useful beyond the person who lands directly on your website.

It also gives search platforms more context about your business.

Your services. Your expertise. Your location. What makes you different. The questions customers ask most often.

You can’t assume the right information is already out there.

If there are things you want potential customers to know about your business, make sure you’re actually giving them that information.

When Should You Spend More on Marketing?

Paid advertising can absolutely help a business grow.

But it works better when there is something solid underneath it.

Before adding another campaign, channel, or tactic, take a quick look at the foundation:

Can people easily find accurate information about your business? Does your Google Business Profile represent you well? Does your website clearly explain what you do? Are your reviews and business details current? Is the next step obvious?

If the answer to any of those is “not really,” that’s probably the better place to start.

Because sending more traffic to an unclear or outdated online presence doesn’t solve the underlying problem.

It just sends more people into it.

Start With the Foundation.
Then Build From There.

You don’t have to do everything at once.

And getting serious about marketing doesn’t automatically mean spending more money.

Start by making better use of what you already have.

Make it easy for people to find you.

Give them useful information.

Help them understand why your business is worth considering.

Make the next step clear.

Then, when you’re ready to invest in advertising, content, or another marketing channel, you’re not starting from scratch.

You’re building on a foundation that’s already doing its job.
